Language Access Conference Graphic Design – 2015

I was recently commissioned to design a graphic for the Language Access Conference in Massachusetts through a friend. It was most welcome as I was itching to do some graphic design, and the process was rather fun. I was given some basic stipulations: the graphic must include a graphic of MA, a representation of the languages spoken in MA, and an inclusion of sign language in the graphic. There was also a suggestion of including speech bubbles in the graphic.

With these requirements, I set creating the initial designs. The colors were chosen mainly to show the design, and they could be changed if needed. Below are the first designs I sent. The last design was my attempt to create a graphic similar to one that they sent me (I couldn’t use the original). My personal favorite was the first one with the fourth one as a close second.

After I sent them the initial designs, they wanted to continue with the design with the large speech bubble, with a few minor edits. Instead of having hello in the different languages, they suggested to have the language represented with their respective name (English, Español, Portugues, etc), and have the name of the organization in the speech bubble. They also preferred the transparent state of MA as opposed to the filled in state. So after a few more (very similar) iterations, I came up with the final design.

And to conclude, here is the graphic being used on their webpage.
